Introducing Distressed Hardwood Flooring And Our Latest Custom Colour

Once you’ve decided on hardwood flooring, you’ll realize that you have a lot of options to choose from. Gaylord Hardwood Flooring offers top-of-the-line hardwood flooring, but we strive to do more: We are constantly coming up with new ideas for unique options you won't find anywhere else.

Some of the products we offer that you won't find on the rack at big box stores include: We've developed two new options for your flooring projects: Distressed hardwood flooring, and slate-coloured flooring.

Distressed Hardwood Flooring

Our distressed hardwood flooring isn't quite what you might think based on popular distressed furniture you can increasingly find in stores; we don't finish the wood then artfully sand it back to give it an aged appearance. Instead, what we've created is a unique process that creates a rustic finish:
  • Using a steel brush, we scrape out the softer fibres of the wood grain. This is a hands-on endeavour that leaves the textured, harder grain behind.
  • Once the wood has been scraped — or 'distressed' — we apply a white stain to the wood. This gives the wood white undertones and really shows off the beauty of the grain.
  • To finish, we apply any selected stain and finish the wood with our standard titanium finish.
The finished product looks great and is incredibly easy to maintain; any marks from wear and tear will just blend into the flooring. There are a few limitations for distressed hardwood: It only works with open grain woods like ash, hickory, oak and our live sawn oak. What is open grain wood? When you look at open grain varieties of wood, you can actually see the pores in the boards; it's this soft, more porous material that can be scraped out. Closed grain woods, in contrast, have pores that are so small you can't see them clearly with the naked eye; these varieties, like maple, don't have any softer material to scrape out.

A Million Different Colours

Grey Hardwood Flooring

"We can literally do any colour under the sun," says Greg Gaylord, Sales Manager at Gaylord Hardwood Flooring. "Anything is possible... We recently did a hot pink bedroom." Our latest made-by-request colour? Slate. "It looks amazing," said Gaylord.  Custom colours are applied at the factory, before the titanium finish is applied; completing the whole process at the factory ensures high quality and consistency in colour. While Gaylord Hardwood Flooring can blend virtually any colour, there are a few things to consider:
  • Dark colours can add drama to a space and make other colours (i.e. rugs, furniture) pop. However, it's much harder to hide dirt and marks on darker-coloured floors, so it can take more work to keep them looking their best.
  • Lighter colours help mask dirt as well as wear and tear. With the right finish, lighter-coloured hardwood floors can be very low-maintenance.
Give us a call or drop by our showroom; we’ll be happy to explain your different options, show you what each style looks like, and talk about the colour and finish that will best suit your needs.

Hi, we have 3 dogs and are installing hardwood floor throughout the house. I find your dog friendly floors very interesting.

Likely an ash or hickory or oak. We want a very light finish and have it installed.

How does your prices compare to the market in general. We are located near smiths falls Ontario.

Your web sight makes me nervous on pricing.

Any distressed wood is quite good for dogs. The harder the wood the better. An exotic wood with a distressed finish would be the best because they are typically done in a natural finish and the wood itself is very hard.

We have a 70 lb dog who scratched our last hard wood floors pretty bad. It was not a great quality floor but we are a little nervous about putting in hardwoods again in a new home we are building. What distressed wood and color would you suggest to best hide scratches?
Thanks
Paul

Hi Gord

Our pricing is very comparable to most Canadian manufacturers. We sell direct to clients so we are able to give you the best quality flooring at a very reasonable price. Our pricing wouldn’t be comparable to the Made in China products you see at home depot but ours is excellent value with a 40-year warranty.
